You know those times you immediately fall for that kitchen gadget on TV and order one before the commercials even over…
And then there are those times when you have to watch 10 commercials for the same mop before you decide to order one…
I was the second person when it came to coaching.
I trained to be a counselor for 5 years before I ever even heard of coaching. I watched a video about coaching for one of my counseling classes and immediately had my doubts.
“There are counselors for that”, “Why wouldn’t someone just go to therapy”, “They’re just giving advice and setting goals, it’s surface level stuff”…oh yea, those were my thoughts at that time.
And so I was done with that topic. Next.
A year later I saw someone I follow on Instagram mention having a life coach. “Mmh”, I say, “yea yea I’ve heard of those. Moving on.”
But she kept talking about it, gushing about how much coaching has helped her with her anxiety and weight loss. Now my ears perk up. Anxiety? That’s what I help with as a counselor-in-training. What’s a life coaching doing helping people with anxiety?
Weight loss? So there’s another way to do it other than a diet program?
So I investigated. I wanted to know more about those infringing upon the work I’ve studied for so long. And I’ve always been open to learning new ways of losing weight. I knew one day I’d finally figure this out.
I found myself engrossed in what I had found. I started understanding things I had only started to grasp in my master’s program. Someone was explaining the way the brain and body works in a way I’d never heard it before. I hit the mother load.
It didn’t take too long to understand what was happening. Instead of being taught all of the different types of counseling and psychologies, I was being taught a simplified form of understanding that answered all of the reasons why I did the things I did and what to do about it.
Instead of being taught who believed what about the brain, I was being taught how to not give into a craving from a brain/body perspective. It was exactly what I needed.
And it worked! I was feeling a change happen within me just from investigating and learning about life coaching. I was sold. From there, I joined my first coaching program. And I haven’t turned back since.
I learned how to lose over 15lbs with coaching (and keep it off). I learned how to have a better marriage with coaching. I learned how to have stronger faith with coaching. I am utterly convinced coaching is the way if you are stuck and want to do more with your life.
So I chose to shift my path and help people with coaching.
I still carry with me all of the knowledge I gained over time learning about counseling and psychology, and I did finish my masters program, but I can’t think of a better way to help my clients achieve their dreams, goals, and change their lives than with life coaching.
