Trust yourself.

But what does trusting yourself look like?

Well, it’s the opposite of doubting yourself.

I made a new mac ‘n cheese recipe last week for a potluck (forgive me Kraft for turning my back on you).

No big deal, you might think.

Except I take pride in my cooking abilities and only every once in awhile does someone outside of House Bowman try what I make.

And every single time, without exception, I get super nervous and consider 20+ times going to Wal-Mart and buying pre-made dishes instead.

Why all the stress and anxiety? For just a few people to try my dish?

Because I’m beating myself up in my head the whole time and that feels like crap.

I’m constantly telling myself that I’m not actually a good cook, that I’ve been fooling myself all along, that I suck and now everyone’s going to find out.

So instead of feeling terrible because I’m talking down to myself, it’d just be easier to bring Wal-Mart’s dish to the potluck.

Being the Life Coach that I am, I’ve noticed this pattern and have recently decided to do two things (because I really love cooking and want to get over this):

1.) Stop all that nonsense and
2.) Trust myself.

I’m going to stop beating myself up as I’m cooking, thinking about cooking, and on my way to the potluck. I’ll remind myself that I don’t suck and I am a good cook even if my dish is actually not that great.

AND I’ll trust that no matter what I’ll keep that promise TO MYSELF.

That second one’s important because you know how easy it is to say you’re going to stop doing something and then three days later you’re back to doing it again, blind to how you slipped back into that pattern again.

Next time you want to make a change, make sure you decide what you’ll change and then have some faith in yourself to keep that promise.

As I go to the next potluck, I’ll go into it knowing that no matter how my mac ‘n cheese tastes or what others say about it, I won’t even consider talking down to myself.

Now that’s trusting yourself.

Here are some questions to consider during your downtime today:

What does it look like when you trust yourself?

What does it look like when you aren’t trusting in yourself?

How can you get better at trusting yourself today?

P.S. Want help learning how to trust yourself? You’re in luck because that’s literally my specialty. It’s what I help my clients do each week and it’s the work I do on myself. Why? Because trusting yourself is the yellow brick road to all of the goals and accomplishments you’ve ever wanted to succeed at. So let’s get on a call and see if coaching is right for you. I’d love to be the one to help you learn how to trust yourself.
