There is no try, there is only do.

My mentor told this story and I felt it something deep.

Her coach told her to try to rip a piece of paper.

My mentor ripped the paper.

Her coach said, “No, try to rip the paper.“

My mentor, again, ripped the paper.

Her coach said, “I don’t want you to rip the paper, I want you to try to rip the paper.“

My mentor said, “I TRY to rip the paper and I DO. What do you want from me?“

Have you ever tried to walk?

Yea, when you were 1 or 2 right?

You took a step, fell down, got back up, and repeated the cycle until you became a natural-born walker. Now you’ve been walking for years.

Now go try to walk. It’s weird. In fact, you probably don’t even know what it means to ‘try to walk’.

You can’t TRY to walk because you already know HOW to walk. You know how to walk so you just do it.

That’s because trying isn’t really doing.

Trying isn’t actually an action. It’s an idea of an action.

Doing is an action.

Even when you’re learning how to do something, you’re not trying. You’re doing: you’re taking an action, evaluating whether it worked or not, and then doing something new or doing the same thing.

When you’re “trying” something, you’re thinking about doing it, thinking about failing or succeeding at doing it, and then considering doing it.

“Do or do not. There is no try.” –Yoda 

Now that you know what Yoda meant when he said that famous quote, next time you hear yourself saying you’re going to try and lose weight, be honest with yourself.

Are you actually committing to losing weight or are you going to think about it?
